Federal State Budgetary Institution "Academician I. S. GRAMBERG All-Russia Scientific Research Institute for Geology and Mineral Resources of the Ocean" (FSBI "VNIIOKEANGEOLOGIA"), today is known as base scientific institution of Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation and the Federal Agency for Subsoil Use of the Russian Federation (Rosnedra) in the field of the geological study of the Continental Shelf, World Ocean, Arctic and Antarctic.
FSBI “VNIIOkeangeologia” plays a significant role in realization of the provisions of the “Marine Doctrine of the Russian Federation for the period up to the year of 2020” endorsed by the President of Russia on July 27, 2002 and government’s policy documents to ensure resource (mineral raw materials) and geopolitical interests of our country.
The history of the Institute originates since July 10, 1948, when the Scientific Research Institute of Geology of the Arctic was founded by the Decree of the Council of Ministers of USSR №2534-1047 on the basis of the mining and geological conditions of the then “Glavsevmorput” [“MainNorthern Sea Road”] to carry out comprehensive scientific research program for the study of the geological structure and minerals prospects of the Central and Eastern regions of the Soviet Arctic and geological mapping of these regions.
The Ministry of Geology of the USSR Decision №328 of July 23, 1981 approved the conversion of the Scientific Research Institute of Geology of the Arctic to the Federal State Unitary Enterprise «The All-Union (now the All-Russia) Scientific Research Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources of the World Ocean» which on the July 07, 2003 was named after an outstanding scientist, the director of the Institute in 1972-2002 academician I.S. Gramberg.
The recognition of the emeritus “The dual subordination status” (Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia (MPR) Academy of Sciences) in 1992 revealed the high scientific authority of the Institute.
According to decree No. 2062-p dated 15 October 2015, the enterprise FSUE «The All-Russia Scientific Research Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources of the World Ocean named after academician I. S. Gramberg» has been converted to the Federal State Budgetary Institution (FSBI “VNIIOkeangeologia”) the main objectives of which are:
For these purposes, FSBI “VNIIOkeangeologia” carries out research in following main areas:
As of today the Institute represents the multidisciplinary research organization, consisting of 2 corresponding member of the RAS, 21 PhDs and 56 candidates of sciences; 9 employees who were awarded the State Prize of Russia. The scientific researches attracts more and more young specialists, postgraduates and graduates of the Saint Petersburg Mining University, Saint Petersburg University and other educational institutions of the city.
Over the past decade the production-technical base in the Institute has increased, the modern domestic and foreign equipment has been purchased for marine geological and geophysical researches and laboratory analytical service.
The international scientific and technical cooperation is being undertaken under the auspices of the leading international organizations: the United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf, the International Seabed Authority, SCAR (Antarctic), InterRidge (mid-ocean ridges research), NADP (arctic drilling), as well as in the framework of joint projects with marine and polar foreign organizations.
Highly qualified specialists of the Institute are possess outstanding knowledge of the classical national geological school and armed with modern research technologies, are ready to solve a wide range of problems in the field of geology, geophysics and geochemistry.
