The main goals are

  • Studying oil and gas content in the Arctic and the global ocean;
  • Survey under the issue of defining the outer limits of the continental shelf of the Russian Federation in the Arctic and the Pacific Oceans;
  • * Methodical provision and conduct of geological mapping on the Russian shelf;

  • Study of geology and solid minerals in the global ocean;
  • Geoenvironmental research and monitoring of the environment of the continental shelf of the Russian Federation;
  • Information support and development of new techniques and technologies for marine geological and geophysical research.

The laboratory uses three main units

  1. Aero Geophysical Laboratory
  2. Marine Geophysical Laboratory
  3. Ground Mobile Seismic Laboratory

The laboratory addresses the following goals through these three main units:

  1. Aerial magnetic survey and gravitational survey using the "Magnit" Aero Geophysical Laboratory.
  2. Assessment of hazardous geodynamic processes in the transit zone.
  3. Assessment of landslides.
  4. Assessment of man-made influence activity on geological, industrial and civilian objects through the method of acoustic emission.
  5. Search for mineral ore deposits.
  6. Search for oil fields.
  7. Search for secondary oil deposits.
  8. Engineering and geological survey: - research on the status of hydraulic facilities; - study of the integrity of underground communications; - search for aquifers;
  9. Seismological studies: - mapping the heterogeneity of the upper part of the geological section; - mapping of weak tectonic violations and fracture zones (search and monitoring of "living" fractures); - seismic zoning of landslide territories.

The laboratory has a unique set of geophysical equipment:

  1. Magnetometric system: Modular and vector magnetometers;
  2. Gravimetric system: The "Chekan AM" gravimeter;
  3. GPS-JAVAD-Lexon GGD 112-T data receiver;
  4. A marine towed proton precession magnetometer/ SEA SPY gradiometer;
  5. A Sonic broadband seismoacoustic profilograph;
  6. E-14-440 acoustic recorder and acoustic sensors: - The "Gnom" station - piezoceramic transducer -"Cherepashka" seismoacoustic station
  7. AM-2M Magnetometer-Gradiometer
  8. MMP-203MS Proton magnetometer (foot)
  9. The "Grot" and "Loza" electromagnetic georadars;

The laboratory has received 22 patents for inventions.

Further research projects

  • Development of a unique mobile integrated geophysical Laboratory to study, monitor and predict hazardous geological processes;
  • Development of complex aero-geophysical research technology, including measurement of the Earth's magnetic field module, gravity fields and vector measurements of the EMF;
  • Development of technology for acoustic positioning of the upper section on land and shallow water;
  • Developing ways to link different-time aero-magnetic surveys;
  • Upgrading of the existing system of forecasting earthquakes in the waters and associated tsunami by means of a multiray reception of the signal.
