VNIIOkeangeologiya presented a report on a joint Russian-Chinese project at the Mining University

15.06.2023

Within the framework of the 2nd International Scientific and Practical Conference «Breakthrough Technologies in the Exploration, Development and Production of Hydrocarbon Resources», which was held in St. Petersburg on June 7-9, 2023, Deputy Director General - Head of the GMRA Department German Leichenkov presented a report at the Mining University «Joint Russian-Chinese ice drilling project with core sampling a lodge in the northwestern part of Princess Elizabeth Land, East Antarctica».

The project involves drilling the subglacial environment in East Antarctica in 2023-2024 and will be carried out jointly by Jilin University and the Chinese University of Earth Sciences. Drilling will be carried out in the northwestern part of Princess Elizabeth Land, where there is a linear magnetic anomaly crossing the rift zone of the Lambert Glacier. The height of the glacier surface at the drilling point is 720 m, and the thickness of the ice is about 650 meters. A mobile drilling rig and a new electromechanical projectile for drilling ice and rocks will be used.

It is planned to carry out a complete selection of the ice core and the bedrock. The results of the project will provide data on the subglacial geology of East Antarctica, and the materials will be shared between the Russian and Chinese sides for further research.
